Mercutio is my favorite character from Romeo and Juliet, that is, because of his long speeches, his somewhat laid-back nature and most important, the way he dies. The fact that he dies while fighting for his friend Romeo makes it a great character for me.
For me, characters whom I have gained a liking to must die to make a great story. Examples of this would be the characters V from V for Vendetta, Leonidas from 300 or almost every main character from the Videogame Valkyrie Profile before becoming an Einherjar.
